The "Dreaded" Procedure

Well, it's come and gone and I have survived the dreaded procedure, my colonoscopy. If any of you read "Jump Start" in the comics, you will have been reading about one of the characters being goaded, nagged and threatened into having a colonoscopy.

It never took any of those things to encourage me to have my first {or any of the following} colonoscopies. I had a friend die of colon cancer that advanced to her liver. It never crossed my mind to try to weasel out of the test. My doctor first suggested it at age fifty-five. I had another one at 60 and my third one yesterday.

There is really nothing to the test itself. If the preparation doesn't kill you, you're sure to survive the procedure. LOL.

The torture starts the day before the test when your last meal is to be taken before 9 A.M. In my case, I skipped church so that we could go out and have a hearty breakfast. Now, once I've had my Sunday special breakfast, I usually don't even think about food again until 6 P.M. Not this week, I swear I was starving by noon. Believe me, jello and broth don't do much to fill the empty void in your tummy.

At 3 P.M. the fun begins. You begin drinking the above combination of elixirs. Since my test wasn't until yesterday afternoon, I got to drink half of the potion on Sunday and the other half Monday morning at 7 A.M. I have a particularly sensitive stomach. Getting the liquid down wasn't a problem; it was making it stay down that worried me. It wasn't easy, but I did manage to get it to stay down, both times.

I did my best to stay away from poor Jim during this time of preparation. To say the least, I wasn't a very fun date. But I managed to survive and the test itself went off with out a hitch. My dear hubby took me out to eat after we left the surgical center, and did his best to keep me from falling asleep in my soup. I spent the next fifteen hours sleeping and woke up to a full body rash this morning. Guess maybe it didn't go off without a hitch after all.

Okay, I'll admit it wasn't fun, but the peace of mind I have as a result of 24 hours discomfort is worth it all. If you are over 55, please do yourself and your loved ones a favor and schedule your colonoscopy.

Oh yes, did I mention I have to go back for an endoscopy in two weeks? Poor Jim.

Oh dear that sounds awful. They don't do them in the UK unless you have a problem that has been picked up in the screening test programme or are at risk.

Think I'll pass on that one. I have a mammogram and a smear test coming up, they'll do for now. The cancer I worry about is ovarian cancer.

I am glad you had the test as it could save your life. But I feel for anyone going through the preparation.

I have no idea how you were able to go out to eat after. But kuddos to you.

I pray the results are nothing to be concerned of.

Well, Pam, you are a trooper! I'm glad it went off without too much discomfort, and I hope the body rash has been taken care of and is gone. I know this procedur is a life saver, but I just can't get myself to go through it, and I am 72. But, thank you for the encouragement.

Hugs,

Renie

I'm with Renie...you are a trooper! So glad you're taking good care of yourself, though. We've had a colon scare in the family and it's so important to take it seriously.

HUGS and best wishes for the next "scopy" coming up!

I would NEVER survive the prep for it. I'd be jumping up and down like a little kid, begging for the potty!

Good for you for getting it done, though. :-)

It's time well spent even though the prep isn't much fun. I was asleep on the table before I could count down from 100 to 95! lol! Don't know when I am due for another one but will check when I go in for my yearly physical. It can save your life so well worth it! I too don't know how you went out to eat after! I would have been asleep in my food!

Oh Pam, I am so sorry.

But since I know you love a good snicker you reminded me of an article my favorite columnist wrote on the subject and I think you will enjoy it.

To all my friends in Blogland. I don't feel like a Trooper. I was really kind of snarky about the whole thing. It is so very important to my health (and yours). The endoscopy is much easier. Just a six hour fast. I can do that.

Thanks to all of you for your good words.

Oh Pam, been there, done that. It was when I was probably 39. The way it all happened is funny now, not funny then. Steve had had some blood that I was VERY concerned about, plus high blood pressure. He was very stubborn back then in our younger days. He agreed to a complete physical ONLY if I too had one. I agreed and he quickly called to schedule us. We went on the same day, 15 minutes apart, were in rooms next to each other...very sweet... The doc saw Steve first for the basic assessment stuff, then buzzed over to see me while Steve "readied" himself for the grand finale. I jokingly told the doc the story about my concerns for Steve and that I agreed to come ONLY because I had to get him in. WELL, it turns out that Steve was okey dokey. ME, MY blood pressure was sky high and I had a positive hemoccult and thus, had a colonoscopy-it was fine. I'll never forget it...

Hugs to you!
