Not only is it Friday, but it's Good Friday, the day commemorating the death of Jesus. I have always wondered why such an infamous day could be called good. I still don't have an explanation of that. Of course, it is good for us who are saved from our sins by the death of Jesus. But it certainly wasn't good for Jesus.
As Christians, we gladly accept the sacrifice of the cross, but we don't like to think of the reality of that sacrifice. Jesus didn't just die, he died a horrible, painful, humiliating death. I know, it's hard to think of the details of that death, but doing so should make us appreciate our salvation all the more.
When I was younger, Good Friday was really observed nationwide. Churches were open between the hours of 1 and 3, stores closed for that time, people who were working left work to attend church. That isn't the case any more. Now, people are out shopping, eating in restaurants, taking their kids to the zoo, etc., many churches don't have services. That shouldn't keep us from taking some time today to remember what the day means to anyone who seeks to know the truth of Christ.

Pam, I remember, too, when Good Friday was much revered (and it still is moreso in my hometown of Pennsylvania than it is down south here). Hoping for a trend that it is given the important place in our lives that it deserves.
Sad but signs of the times I'm afraid. The new religion is shopping.

So well put. Yes, it is a solemn day, a day we should spend in prayer and contemplation, remembering the great sacrifice of our Savior, to save us. The joy will follow on Easter Sunday, when we remember the glory of His resurrection.

I am glad that Good Friday is still observed here in Canada. Everything is closed today, (except restaurants) all stores, post office, banks...etc. Here, there are services tonight.
Today is the reason that we can go to heaven, I think Good Friday (and Easter Sunday) is more important than Christmas.
Well stated, Pam! I remember the stores closing from 1 to 3, too, when we were in school. Today, things are just too commercialized....merchants don't want to lose that money!!! Great post!!!
